Mercedes C-Class reliability - how does it truly compare?

We don't have an equivalent model in the U.S. Only larger engines for us.
430 C-Class owners now signed up. A good start, but more are needed to provide precise results for all model years.

We have updated results for the C-Class to include owner experiences through December 31, 2009. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:
2009: 50, about average
2008: 27, better than average
2007: 90, about average, but small sample size
2006: 59, about average, but small sample size
2005: 63, about average
2003: 170, worse than average, but small sample size
A big thank you, once again, to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May and August. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years.

Just enhanced the related repair history survey so that it can be used as a personal car maintenance record.
As always, more participants would be helpful. Updated results in May, with a preview for participants next month.

Starting this month we have a new question to measure, as objectively as possible, the severity of a problem. Many people have been asking for reliability stats that weight problems by how severe they are, and once we have enough responses with the revised survey we'll start providing this.
Also, updated reliability stats this month.
As always, the more owners participate, the better the information we can provide to everyone.

Ok folks, here goes....I've owned Benz for over 40 years, had quite a few, but after the experiences with my '97 and 05 c class, I will never own a Benz again. My 10 year old granddaughter asks "Papa, why does this car (the '05 Kompressor) make such noises? Benz is supposed to be a good car." Answer: the dealer says there are no noises, 18mpg is good mileage, and we don't know why you are bringing the car in....my answer: I've been bringing this car in repeatedly since I bought it at 30000 miles (CPO), it used to get 28-32 mpg, it now has 70000 miles, warrenty is expired, and the same issues have not been resolved. Thumping, rumbling, popping noises, and poor mileage, not to mention ongoing HVAC issues....that is the new Benz standard. Benz I have owned since 1968: '59 190, 62se, 66 250s 88 560sec, '97 c230, '05 230Kompressor....Doubt I'll be posting here anymore except to see the reply/comments to this post... good luck to all of you with your issues.
I'm buying a Ford....

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.
With the 2008 the percentage with no repairs is about 77, while the percentage with 3+ repair trips is about 3.
