Default 94 c280 Speedometer failure

Hi all,

The speedometer on my 94 c280 suddenly stopped working last night. It was pretty frigid last night, and my car was in an outdoor parking lot for about 5 hours (it's always garaged at home) before this happened. As I drove home, the needle rested on 0 then suddenly jumped to the correct speed, then would go down to 0 again. Could the cold weather have something to do with it? Today I drove it for a short trip, and it never worked at all (yes, it's cold again today).

Also, I recently got a new engine wiring harness -- might there be a loose connection?

Thanks for any help.

Default RE: 94 c280 Speedometer failure

I've had that same trouble with my '94 C280. It's worse when it's cold. The car is parked outside and on cold days (below 40F) it sometimes never works at all. Some posts will try to convince you that the little peg that the needle rests on gets sticky and holds the needle down. I've removed mine and tried the trick of putting a little dab of superglue on the peg so that it wouldn't stick to the needle. It did not work. I'm convinced that there is a loose connection or bad component that causes this. Somewhere on this site I saw a post for a company that re-builds your cluster if you send it to them.

I'm interested in your wiring harness trouble. What were the symptoms?
