I purchased 1999 c-280 september 2004 with 82k draw 15 months now 92k keep oil change air filters etc. Recently noticed change in engine noice. Checked all fluid looks okay. Engine coolant looks dirty need to change, also thinking to change spark plugs. Waiting for repair manual. Any one done service at home? Please share your experience. The 90K mi. service is a major service.
You should change plugs, A/T fluid, Coolant fluid, differential gear oil, and brake fluid, fuel filter. Your C280 as an all aluminum block and head which means you need to keep the coolant clean. Also, I recommend you use MB coolant.
Not done at home, but will be having my mech do this service next week.
BTW, there may be more items that should be serviced at 90K mi, but I don't know about them yet.
Good luck.

Yes, 90K miles is a biggie service. When you say change in engine noise, what type of change, tapping, louder? Could be a bad header, valve stem or as in my case my 99 C280 had a taping noise for about 6 moths when the engine was warm and seemed louder then when I bought it. I received in the mail the recall for the hormonic balancer replacement. The dealer replaced the balancer and the serpentine belt, as it was worn, by the old balancer and was included in the free recall. Now the car is much quieter, the taping noise is gone and it sound like a new car again. Also, I installed a CAI last summer, and I believe the new balancer has helped there also. Another feature that sometimes worked and didn't work was the auto start feature, it was hit and miss since I bought the car. Since the new balancer it works everytime.
Also, you have a lot of miles, not overly so, but lets face it your approaching the speedo rollover point and any engine is going to "change" with that many miles, it just might be the passing of time and age?
One other point I mentioned serpentine belt, they will make noise just before they snap, and stops your engine. Has that every been changed?

Like Wizard says, it may be belt noise.
During our bout of cold weather here in December- with freezing temps- I began to hear, what I was sure was, valve noise at start up: a metallic, ticking noise that would subside after complete warm-up. For some reason (not sure why anymore), I decided it might be belt noise and I applied some belt dressing from a spray can to the serpentine belt. Almost the instant the spray hit the moving belt the noise disappeared completely. Needless to say, a cheap repair.

You know you reminder me of something, I did the same thing. but instead of belt dressing, I applied a product called Gummi Pflege IMHO the best rubber protectent made. I found it when I had a BMW, they sold it exclusively. I ran out of it, after 5 years of use from one bottle. BMW doesn't carry it any longer, but I found it online at www.drivewerks.com a division of Pelican Parts, whom I have done business with on and off over the years. The noise stopped for quite a while.
