sun roof seal

sun roof seal
I just got a '84 300SD. The P.O. had had it for 4 years and when I noticed it had a sun roof he said he didn't like sun roofs and had never had it open. I do (like sun roofs) but haven't tried to open it because I wondered if the seal might be stuck and would tear. I live in Texas and the heat might have fused it after being closed for so long. Does anyone know the best way to get it open without damage? Is there any kind of liquid I could apply around the edges to loosen it up or something? For all I know it would open with no problem and I'll eventually just try that if no one has any tips. I've done too much damage to machinery in the past by using force instead of finesse so I'm proceeding with caution. Thanks for your advice.
