Default Rear Axle

Does changing the rear axle in the first 1000 R107's ruin the new axle, if you do not drop the differential?

The first 107's had axles with a 12mm hub bolt. The axle was also aproximatly .020" longer than the second generation axle. Which BTW fits all kinds of 107 &123 cars.

I have a slight vibration that all started when a chunk of road debris tore the boot on one of the axles. The boot repair kit was about the sameprice as the whole axle. So now 5 axles 2 wheel bearings a carrier bearing and flex coupelinglater, I still have the vibration and I am beginning to wonder if changing the axle actually ruins it.

I have tried the OE, the rebuilt, the 2nd generation OE, a Junk Yard axleand the Chinese after market all have problems and do not work the way I like my car to roll.

You have to compress the axle to get it out. I'm wondering if this is the problem. WhenI tried the second generation axle (with the 8mm hub bolt) it just didn't seat right in the splined hub and made a whining noise at highway speeds. I had a special bushing made at a machine shop that I thought would end the noise; but no such luck.

Even though most "OLd Timers" say you don't need to drop the differential to change the axle. My thoughts now are Yes you do on the first few 107's.

Anyhelp would be welcome.

Default RE: Rear Axle

I have never had to drop the rear diff to change an assembly like you are talking about. Could your problem be in the differential itself?
