NEED HELP w/ '88 420SEL....
I need to replace the ignition switch. Ignition is located on the dash, and I need help to remove that portion of the dash and get to the switch. I'm looking for some step by step directions if possible or a diagram / schematic.
Let me elaborate on the problem... I may be going in the wrong direction.
I recently replaced the fuel pump because it was leaking. The pump I replaced it with was a little bit louder than the original. So, a few months later, I started having problems with the car not wanting to start, and noticed that I did not hear the fuel pump when I turned the key, just before turning over the motor.
I clicked the ignition over a few time, and still nothing. Then, after repeatedly turning the ignition on and off several time, I heard the pump engage and turned over the motor, starting without any problems. For several days, I would not have any problems, then it started all over again. It would not start. So, I did the same routine and it would start.
Now, NOTHING>>> so I thought maybe I burnt out the switch, or it was acting like a starter, and hitting a dead spot.
Thanks!!!

The illustration in the Mercedes-Benz epc Shows the switch held to the back of the steering column lock with three screws.
I'm not sure but you may be able to remove the switch from behind.
Mercedes-Benz sells all their published repair manuals via their Customer Service line 1-800-FOR-MERCdes 1-800-367-6372
The switch is #11 in the illustration
I hope this helps. Les4Parts
