looking at 89 420SEL - Need advise
Hi,
New to the forum... I am looking at a 1989 Dark red 420 SEL. It has 185,000 miles on it and he is asking $2250. These are the known mechanical things he has done to it:
The cars drivetrain is in excellent condition. We broke the timing belt about 2 years ago, and replaced the heads with completely new/rebuilt. Our mechanic says it should be good for another 200,000 as long as oil changes are done. We put about $3,500 into the motor when we replaced the heads and have only driven it about 2,000 miles since.
Breaks are great, new all around, and new rotors on the front.
Yes, and we also replaced the water pump since "we were there".
Anything you can shed light on would be helpful. I want this as a 2nd car, especially for winter since I currently have a convertible. Is this a good price?
Thanks,
Brian

RE: looking at 89 420SEL - Need advise
Well with the most major things (Timing belt and effects and the water pump) out the way and no complicated expensive rear self-leveling hydraulic system to worry about (560SEL.), you should be good as long as everything else is good. And the statement "drivetrain is in excellent condition" should mean you're good to go, but hopefully it's coming from the mouth of a good mechanic. I suggest having a mechanic give it a total look over just to be sure.
And as long as it's cosmetcally straight, you should have a good deal.
