Hi,
I'm glad it turned out to be the oil cooler rather than the head gasket.
I hope the new cooler wasn't too expensive. At least the labour repair time should have been a little less expensive!!
You stated that the garage had not come across many head gaskets in their experience. Thanks to MB engineering that is correct.
However I would suggest that they haven'y encountered many modine oil cooler failures either!
I wonder why it fractured (internally) at 140k?
Wrong oil spec? Inadequate antifreeze? Pressure cycle fatigue cracking....?
Any info on this from the garage would be interesting and may help others in the future.
220k = Starship Enterprise mileage?? How about 900k+!! (Car sold recently on eBay. Details available if you PM me)
