The entry level C-Class in '98 in Canada was the C230 but we also had both the Classic and the Elegance models available here. Mechanically speaking, they are the same. The Classis is the stripper or entry level version while the Elegance is the more upscale version which has more standard features. For example, the Classic came with steel wheel and hubcaps while the Elegance came with alloy rims ( both were 15" but the Classic arrived with 195/65 while the Elegance came with 205/60 series tires ). The Classic also had a cloth interior while the Elegance came with MBtex seats. I'm not sure of the exactprice difference back in '98 but I know there was a premium of several thousand dollars for the Elegance over the Classic.
