Default C280 timing cover gasket

I have a 1995 C280 (which I just purchased) and found out that the timing chain cover gasket was leaking oil. The dealer fixed it under warranty. It's a very tight junction, so you can't really see an exposed gasket, but when I looked at it, it looked like the there is clear caulk sealing the area around the cover. Is this normally done in place of a gasket or in addition to a gasket? Did these guys take it off and throw some caulk in where they should have put a gasket? Should I care if it stops the leaking oil?

Take a look at this thread -----> https://mercedesforum.com/m_21899/mpage_1/tm.htm#21904

Pretty much the same thing on your engine.

That'll give you an idea of what's more than likely leaking (or not leaking now) on your vehicle.

If it's not leaking, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hope this helps

Thanks a lot for your expertise SL600_Cruzin. I really appreciate the info. I thought that the caulk was peculiar (most likely in addition to the gasket), but I won't worry about it. I'll just keep an eye on it.
