Default C Class coupe panoramic roof problem

Hi , I hope that someone out there can help me. I tried to open the panoramic roof on my 2003 c230k coupe last week after it not being used for a few months, after a few moments of horrible clunking noises it decided to begin to open/lift on the right hand side and not the left. The blind works fine and it closes perfectly but when I try to open again it does exactly the same and slightly opens to the right then stops as the roof twists out of shape. I know where the motors are, and hand cranking obtains the same results. I believe it could be a broken rod which operates the left side but does anyone know how I can find out and repair as any of the components seem almost impossible to reach without opening the roof. I am a maintenance technician by trade (although not automotive) so I am not afraid of the work but would really appreciate some advice from someone with knowledge of the workings of these roofs. Many thanks in advance. Regards, Gavin.

I would try to grease up the joints, they may just be stuck from the lack of use. You could also try liquid wrench but keep it from dripping out. Try pushing the leftside with your hand as you push the open button with the other.

Hi Solobinoy2k, thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunately it is imopssible to get to any joints or hinges due to the fact only one side lifts and only aprox. 5mm before jamming due to the twisting effect. I have also attempted to force the left hand side while operating the button butit is totally solid which is why I believe the operating rod has snapped. Regards, Gavin.

Hello, It sounds like the front deflector (see picture above # 60) is broken. If they break they will jam the sunroof and keep it from going back. Open your sunroof as far as it will go, and compare the two sides. If it is broken, you can push the end down to finish opening the sunroof, then change out the deflectors.
