95 sl500 will not crank

I'll try to be brief. Drove to grocery store, got out and depressed button on key to lock the car. Came out and wife opened passenger side door and I opened trunk to load groceries. Went to get into drivers side but door was locked. Remembered that we had been able to open passenger side door and trunk BEFORE unlocking car. Evidently passenger door and trunk did not lock when we went into the grocery store. Depressed button on key to "unlock" drivers side door but door would not unlock. The button on the key is not functioning with respect to unlocking and locking doors. Had to place the key in the lock to unlock drivers side door. Placed key in ignition, turned and . . . nothing. All dash lights illuminate BUT the starter will not turn over. Have checked all fuses in the front fuse box and the ones in the trunk at the pneumatic pump for the door locks. All are good. Have tried disconnecting the battery to "reset". All with the same result. . . starter will not turn over. Lights, radio, top, etc. all function Any ideas? Thanks.
