3.2 v6 engine boggs under hard

I have recently purchased a 2001 c 320 with the 3.2 v6 engine. When I accelerate hard on an on-ramp to freeway the engine boggs so badly that the car will loose speed. I have to pat the accelerator up and down and back off the gas to get it to catch.

Has anyone had this problem and if so, what is the fix? I am a reasonably good amateur mechanic.

Get the OBD On Board Diagnostic DTC Trouble codes read.
Quite possibly the MAF but don't waste your money till you have the supporting codes.

Could be MANY other things.
