Hi I have a 2001 CLK 200k multi function steering wheel model, with an engine management warning light on.

Hi,
You need an OBDII scanner tool.
These are available on the internet.
I use a Dynoscan which requires a Palm Handheld but many others that require laptops or even self contained units exist.
The scan tool will access the onboard computer and give you the fault code that turned the light on plus the conditions prevailing at the time. It also permits you to turn the light off. It may come back on however dependent upon the nature of the fault. garages often turn the light off only for it to come back again as soon as the conditions which caused the light to come on in the first placed are experienced once again. e.g. Max. throttle overtake or something similar.
The fault code does not tell you what component is wrong. You also need to understand the systems or get somebody on a forum like this to advise.
If you don't want to buy a tool get your local MB dealer to scan the vehicle for you. 30mins chargeable time. Get a printed output of the results. Maybe a good idea to also get them to cancel the light. You can then see if it comes back on which reinforces that something requires attention.
