Default 2 dead batteries

bought a 1984, 300 TD:
Was driving from Sarasota Fl to Dover De.; At about 4:30AM the lights and eveything electrical started going out. At about 5:30 - 6AM all electrical ceased to function. The car continued to drive. We made it to Delaware fine. Shut the car off, It wouldn't start back up. Got a Jump; disconnected the battery cable from the positive post; the car still continued to run. Bought new battery before starting back to Florida. Again this battery died durring the trip back. Needless to say durring daylight hours we drove like a bat out of a very hot place.

Is this a result of an ALTERNATOR or something else? I had owned a Nissan Maxima at one point and the Alternator went out; as soon as the battery was dead the car stopped. Not so with this one.

so it's similar to a fuse, than can be easily changed? I replied to one of your previous postings regarding something called a CAN... would that be the same thing?
