Default Trap Oxidizer....

I know that this topic has been covered in the past however I am still a bit confused. So here it is.

I have a 1985 300SD (purchased recently), the recall service campaign 96-1121 has been completed in 2000. I went to my local MB dealer today because this "football" looking thing is still in the engine (under the turbo), they told me that the part number on the device shows that it is not a TRAP Oxidizer but an oxidation CAT (modified as per the bulletin).
Further discussion about the subject indicated that even though the recall had been made it is still possible for this CAT to accumulate soot and degrade the performance of the engine.

Question#1:
I have found this item on line:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Merce...ht_2013wt_1028

The ebay item is listed for a 1985 300D, would this fit and work in my 617 w126 1985 300SD?

Question#2:

If I can find parts of a 1980's 300SD with the federal setup, would I be able to use the parts to bypass this CAT and make it work?

I just want to get rid of this CAT altogether. I don't really understand what this thing is doing in the engine, to begin with. The exhaust gas might look prettier but IMHO this thing is totally useless.

I'll appreciate any advise, suggestions.

Thank you.
