Default Trailer hitch on my 300td?

so, i'm wondering if anyone knows a source for a trailer hitch for a trailer hitch that will go on my '85 300td euro (small bumpers)?

also, anybody have any experience with towing behind this car? any ideas for weight limits, etc? do you think the mechanical limits are in the hitch, the transmission, the motor, or the brakes?

help and/or advice greatly appreciated!

You actually might speak with a u-haul rep. They have a few resources in getting people setup with hitches for their car. My old car '81 300D had a trailer hitch on it. It was already on it when I bought it. Supposingly it pulled a smaller pop-up trailer and row-boat trailer. The way the pick-up is from a start on most of these, its like you are already pulling a boat. I think you would put a lot of stress on the tranny on these cars. I would never think of towing anything with my '78 300D.

I just now ordered one for my 1982 300D T. It doesn't look like it mounts on the bumper. Total, included shipping is $51.45 and it's for a 2000 lb trailer. http://www.racepages.com/performance...ped_brand=true

I towed a 2000lb trailer behind a 1990 VW Jetta Ecodiesel 4 banger, with manual transmission and it did just fine. Surely the robust MB 3.0L and transmission will do even better. However, I'll start off in low and manually shift upward as needed....I'd guess the limits are in the light weight unibody construction... Anything more than 2000 lbs are likely totear off the entire rear end.
`Hope this helped..
Regards, Charlie

Uhaul.com doesn't carry a hitch for the old 300D. But since U haul installed the hitch on my Jetta ecodiesel I checked out the local shop... No Joy.

FYI, I got that hitch yesterday. It's a bumper hitch and won't work on a 123 chassis, so I'll return it today.
