I just got one of these and im trying to figure out whats causing a rattling noise that it makes. I am searching the forums and not finding much. Anybody have info on these engines? Is this the best Merc diesel forum?

 

Thank you for the response! It is a tapping kind of sound that occurs when the engine is revved, at a totally random frequency. Does that sound like sticking lifters?

 

It has the Symptoms of Sticking Lifters but that is not the only thing that can cause the Tapping Noise.

You could go to a Harbor Freight Store and get a Mechanics Stethoscope and listen over the Valve Cover and see if you can locate where the noise is better.

Members of some of the Forums have said that using Synthetic Oil cured their sticking Liter issues. Others have replace the Lifters.
