Default Newbie Questions

Greetings, I'am a newbie,just bought a 2005 E320 with 146k miles from my boss.
I've known this vehicle from day one, always kept up at the dealership.
I bought this car for my daughter who will be attending college this coming year and wanted to keep it in good running condition for her.

1)have been experiencing large amount of black smoke from exhaust? Is this normal?

2)On several occasion, when stepping on acceleration there seems to lose of power.

3)while in park yesterday, car seems to be shaking a lot as if it was ready to shut down until' I gave it some diesel.

Please, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

P.S.Any recommendation on a good reasonable M/B mechanic here in the Houston,Texas area?

Richard

Hello ForcedInduction,Thanks for your advice, are these two problems expensive to fix? and is a M/B dealer the only options to go with?

Thanks,
Richard

Has your Air Filter been changed lately?

No Sir...Is the air filter that crucial? I was on the line of fuel filter, the loss of power felt like my Duramax diesel the last time that I've drove it to Canada.Changed the clogged fuel filter, and she's back to normal.

Taking it to a diesel guy here in Houston to diagnose her Monday.
As mention above by ForceInduction, fuel problems,or injector issues.
What's a fair market price to have BOTH of these issues fixed?

Anyone?

Air filters are in fact important. Clogged up air filter = air restriction which would = black smoke. If the air filter is pretty dirty I'd say it's time to replace it. Also as stated by Forced Induction lack of power and a rough idle could very well be an injector or fuel issue. Not sure if your 05 has electronic injectors or not as I'm not very familiar with Mercedes diesel's but if they are an easy thing to do would be to disconnect one injector at a time. If it runs rougher then you know it's not that one. If you come to one that when you disconnect it nothing changes then you have narrowed it down to that injector.

Actually if you ran the Car briefly without the Air Filter that would tell you if it is the Air Filter. However, you should also check the Air inlet up front to see if that is blocked.

Are you speaking of an E320 the Gasoline Engine or the Diesel E320CDI?
