gear oil leaking from CV boot
'84 300D
Right inner CV boot has started leaking gear oil.
My question before I start taking things apart is, are the inner CV joints lubricated with oil and not grease? If they are packed with grease than I would suspect that I have an axle seal that is leaking.
Thanks,
Phil

The stock Mercedes CV Axles are filled with Oil similar to Differential Oil. If your Axles are not making a lot of noise and you have not driven far on them they can most often be re-booted.
The easiest way is to use Flexx or Dorman Boots as they have the ability to be stretched over the "Cans" on the Axle.
The Stock type Boots require one of the Cans to be cut off and you need a Hydraulic press to take it apart and put it back together. Also you need another new Can and it has to crimped over to put it back together.
I will PM more details
There is some controversy over using Oil or Grease when you re-boot them. Both ways work and some of the Stock Boot kits come with a tube of Grease.
