Is Fuse #5 needed? 83 300D diesel W123
Hi,
I'm looking to solve a problem with my car, and replacing the fuses.
I read to set the fuel gage, (it stopped working), I should remove Fuse #5 for 30 seconds or so, then put back in.
I also read that you should take out Fuse #5 altogether.
Anyone heard of this?
Thanks
LJ

I have not read of either.
Perhaps if the Engine is runing removing the Fuse and putting it back in helps renew the contact area of the Fuse. You would expect your Fuel Gauge to drop when the Fuse is removed and the Fuel Gauge to reactivate with the Fuse is re-installed.
I have a 1984 300D, Federal and when I look on my Fuse Chart the #5 Fuse Position is not connected to anything.
In fact on my Fuse chart it does not list a specific Fuse for the Fuel Tank Sending unit. It has #12- stop lamp, turn signal lamp, instrument cluster, relahy widow llift termminal 86, cruise control, tachometer. All taken care of by a single 8 amp Fuse.
So since the Fuel Gauge is part of the instrument Cluster the #12; 8 amp Fuse would be the one that goes to the Fuel Tank Sending Unit.
It is not uncommon for the Fuel Tank Sending unit to have problems. Sometimes it is just gunked up.
If this forum does not have info on the Fuel Tank Sending Unit you might have to search some other Forums to find that.
