Buying a 1974 240D
Hi all,
I'm in the process of buying a 1974 240D. It's the car at that link but I'm buying it directly from the guy since he's local. Is there anything in particular that I should pay attention to when buying it? I know they say it has under 75,000 miles but I just discovered that the the speedometer(odometer?) cable was either broken or became disconnected at some point in time so I have to wonder how much time elapsed.
The guy says he had new injectors put on it among a few other fuel-system related things. He also says I'll need a new alternator but I can't seem to find any at a semi-decent price for a 1974 so I'm wondering if I shouldn't just get a "generic" alternator from the 1970's, like for a Ford LTD or the like, along with the harness pigtail and wire a cheaper one myself. I'm more than qualified to do that type of thing so that's not remotely scary to me. It also has a 3 inch crack in the upper driver side of the windshield.
Anyway, is this thing worth the $1400 I'll be paying assuming there's not much else wrong with it?
I hope to be converting it over to vegetable oil shortly so I'm hoping the money I save on fuel will be able to cover any parts I might need in the semi-near future.
Thanks
