Default Block Heaters

One other question -

Any good way of testing out your block heater and see if it is working? I tried it out the other night, the first time using it and I did not see much of a difference in starting the car. What is the recommend time that you should run the block heater before using the car?

Thanks!

could it have fried my alternator? I am totally not familar with them and could bea dumb question. I mean, you plug it in, but does it use a power source on the car itself? Just trying to figure out why I have been having trouble with starting the car the last week or so (needed a jumpbox the other day).

Does anybody know how to install a block heaterin an '87 300td? There is a large, plugged nipple just above the thermostat that looks like it might be right, but I can't find any info.

I use my block heater all winter becauseit's easier on my starter and battery.I know it's working because, even on the coldest days, the timing chain housing is warm to the touch. Also, if it has snowed or frosted, the hood remains clear.
