Default 87 300DT electrical problem

Hi,

New member and I hope this is the right place to post this. If it is not, please accept my appologies
and I would appreciate if point me in the right direction.

I have a 87 300DT. It runs Ok, I would say. It starts in the mornings, when is cold not at the first
cranck, but it starts and I get about 25 - 27 mpg in town.

The major problem. The alternator is outputing to much current. I placed a meter at the battery
poles, and some times I get 14.5 volts (what I consider normal), but other times I get 17.3+ volts.
I really can see this at night, when the head lights are on. Some times looks like the road is under
day light. Talking to a mechanic (a friend), he says it is the voltage regulator. But where is the
voltage regulator, in a 87 300DT? Is it inside the alternator? Can I replace the voltage regulator?

TIA,
DP
