1982 300D quandry
I need advice about what to do with my 300D. We bought it last summer for an extra car, intending to maybe get into biodiesel. However, we figure that by the end of this summer we won't be needing it.
This last week the transmission went out on us. The mechanic says that it could be anywhere from $2500 to $4000 to take it apart and find out what the problem is (and rebuild it while he's at it.) I know I can get a rebuilt one for $1400, but I'm not sure what to do with it since we are not planning on keeping the car. Anybody have a clue what it's worth with a broken transmission and where I could sell it? ? I'm a bit leery investing that much in a car I don't plan on keeping.
The car and engine are otherwise in great shape (little or no rust even) in spite of 333k miles.
Are there collectors or folks who would like to fix this baby?

Put it on eBay, be honest in your listing (just like you have been here) and let us know when the listing is up. Anything mechanically wrong can be fixed rather easily. Rust is the enemy of these cars, so if yours is as nice as you say nice it will have value regardless of the current transmission problem.

How does he know the transmission is out? When I bought my car ('82 300CD) that's what the guy told me but it turned out to only need the B2 piston. $200 in parts and 3 hours labor later, the transmission is good as gold.
What is your car doing (or not doing) that necessitates the repair?

Thanks for the responses.
The transmission slips out of gear after a minute or two running and refuses to go anywhere. The engine hums just fine.
I have to take the mechanic's word for it; out here in Johnstown I don't have too many choices.
I'm going to have it towed home and then put it up for sale, as is, for $1,000. I'm sure someone would love to buy it and fix the transmission. It's beyond my ability and, as I said, I won't need the car when I move this summer.
thanks for the advice and I will post the car for sale elsewhere with pics.
