I really am a big fan of theSLK and S Class mercedes I am wondering why mercedes likes to use sohc engines for v8s and v12s and recently just started using dohc with there high tech 6.2 featuring in many models of the line up, I have been wondering this for along time now.

Only a MB engineer can answer that. My guess is to lessen moving parts, weight, looping a double timing chain (since MBs don't have rubber timing belts), minimize the use of sensors. electronics that the ECU monitors and controls etc...... Frankly, since car manufacturers ventured into the aviation industry, they've been making cars like aircrafts. They didn't put in mind that the airlines have a fleet of their own mechanics and avionics technicians. We car owners don't. Then again, that's what I think.
