Default 1982 500 SEL is this rare?

Hi, <-- new user..

I just bought a Merc 1982 500 SEL on on ebay for $330.. needs a little work, headlight, radiator, A/C condensor, both fans, and a new grill. Other than that the car is in really good shape for 23 years old. only 136k miles on it. I cannot locate any information on this car what so ever. I'm new to Merc, but from what I understand, this is a Euro model. all the interior features are in german, even the manual is in german. I'm assuming this is a rare car???? I don't know if I should part this out, or spend the few hundred dollars buying some parts on ebay to fix it. I don't have much knowledge of cars. This is kinda my attempt at a starter restoration job, but i might be in over my head. I welcome anyones opinions.

Thanks,
New merc man..

It isn't really rare, but it certainly is a Euro model, as you've noted. Your car was imported at the height of the 'gray market' boon -- there were lots of Eurosleds brought in around that time. The character Tom Cruise portrayed in Rainman was a gray market importer.

In my opinion for a starter restoration it should be a good choice. The place where most people get in over their heads especially with Euro models is when they basically find out that they must replace the whole driveline. If the car is running good and all it needs is a few hundred dollars to get it there, then you have yourself a bargain. Remember to take your time and try to get stuff done right the first time. And this car only have 136k miles on it? That is rare.

At least you've found the right place for when you start your restoration.

There's some serious knowledge here, and everyone is willing to lend a helping hand you when you hit those "rough" spots.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy the new ride.

Cheers
