The body panels are all composite material, and can be changed by just unbolting, and bolting in a new set. You could even change colors of the car with a second set of panels.
All smarts have a safety cell called Tridion. The cage is what absorbs most of the energy on impact. The wheels and even the engine are part of the crash resistance plan. The car has standard dual front and side air bags, ABS brakes, electronic brake force distribution and emergency brake assist, electronic stability and traction control, and seatbelt pre-tensionners. The smart has not yet been crash tested by the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) or the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). The European New Car Assessment Program (equivalent to the other associations) has rated the smart 3 out of 5 stars in both frontal and lateral impacts.

The car sounds and looks like a death trap and the two blonds must be Polacks.

To my knowledge the US dealers did not want the SMART to be on the US market. Their argument was the SMART would 'damage' the Mercedes Brand of nice limos in the US

But the text is to the customers and not the dealers.....
ACtually here in Pennsylvania BMW is pretty successful in selling Mini Coopers. Many said before as well this would not fit to the BMW image but in times of increasing gas prices small cars get some high demand....

PS: I did the opposite: Since 2 month a Hummer is added to my car collection

I'd hate to have to drive one across the country. It must be tiring being bounced around in something like that for days. Besides, when they're all broken down in the middle of the road, you can just drive over the top of them in your Hummer.

Cars like that are meant for the city. Look out on the highway in America if you're in one of those. The air turbulence from a semi-trailer going 80 mph might blow it off the road. And I wonder how it would climb I-70 through Vail, CO? How about with a tire or suitcase or two in the car?

Open your mind to that.

That mind is so open that the brains are having a hard time staying in...although, his sinuses must be clearer than ever! Nice thing about dinky cars is that any full size pick up will work as a flat bed when necessary. I think the tried and true rickshaw in the LA and New York would be more practical and fun to watch. I guess San Fran has too many hills though.

Paris is having some good hills too. They seem to love Smarts there.
Lugnut is right, that the car is design for city driving. I can only discuss how can he handle cross-country driving in his miniature 600 model, when my family is enjoying comfort of 40-footer.
