model designations
well letters represent the class of the car. There are various classes, C, E, S, M, SEL, SE, CLK, CLS, CL, and a few more. The C and E class are lower class than most of the others but still good cars. CL actually used to be S class but it was a coupe so they changed it's name. There is no reason I can think of that some letters come before or after the number... The numbers represent the size of the engine. for example a mercedes benz S500 has a 5.0 liter engine, a mercedes benz E 320 has a 3.2 liter engine. Hopefully that answers your question.
The numbers were supposed to tell the engine's displacement, but that isn't always the case now.
S600 now has a 5.5L instead of 6.0L, it had a 5.8L for 2001-2002 models.
E240, this engine has 2.6L
180 / 200 / 230 kompressor are all 1.8L inline 4,
