radio code "wait" problem

radio code "wait" problem
I've got a mercedes "audio 10 CD" radio in my 2001 E200K.
A couple of weeks ago the AA needed to disconnect the battery, following which I needed to recode the radio. I tried to key in the 5-digit code but it displayed "WAIT". I went to a Mercedes dealer who was able to establish that the security code for the radio was different - I had either been given the incorrect code card when I bought the car 2ndhand or the radio had been changed before I purchased it.
The manual says that if I key in the wrong code once the "WAIT" message is displayed, I may need to wait 10 minutes before trying again. I've now been driving for more than a total of 11 HOURS! (The dealer said it could take 10 hours)
Has anyone any idea as to what I need to do?
Disconnect the battery again?
How much longer may I need to wait?
Is it permanently disabled (or is there a way round the problem?
