1980 240d noises
Hello... I'm a long standing gas VW veteran who now has made the jump to a MB in the interest of burning SVO for my daily commute. I have a 1980 240d, 245K mi, with a manual transmission and I haven't owned or driven it for a great deal of time. I've solved a number of vaccum problems already, and am delightede to now have a diesel that actually shuts off with the key. However, there is an odd, uneven, and sporatic groan or howl quite oftenwhen accelerating or decelerating in lower gears, particualrly when relatively cold. Noise seems to come from firewall / transmission tunnel area.
Where and how does one check fluid in a 123 w/ manual transmission, and what fluid is spec for replacement? Empties in the trunk suggest that the owner may have been using ATF (sigh). Any suggestions as to the noise or fluid would be appreciated.
Also, will later 15" rims off E class fit an early 80's 240d? I've been offered some with good tread, but haven't wanted to make the trek to get them if they wont bolt up.
Thanks....
