What does the W/S button do?

What does the W/S button do?

1999 SLK 230

To the left of the transmission shifter is a button with a W at the top and an S at the bottom. What does it do?

w starts you out in a higher gear to help keep you from spinning your tires in bad weather, such as snowy conditions. Helps a little, but these wide tired cars are not very good in snow or ice. s is standard or normal.
