Default SLK230 - any warnings?

Hi, I am about to purchase my first Mercedes - an SLK230, 1998, 43.760 miles. It is a California car, 1 owner from Palm Springs. It is in very good condition. I am paying $ 14.000 from a dealer, so after checking the market it seems like a good deal...or?

Is there anything in particular with this model that I should be aware of? Any advices, tips etc. would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

Sounds like a great deal to me. I recently bought a 98 SLK230 from a 1 owner in Fla via eBay. Paid 13,300 + 575 shipping. It had 81000 miles.

If you have access to repair records (hopefully from the MB dealer) that'll tell you alot as to how the car has been maintained. I'd do a Service A for sure. Always use Mobil 1 0w40 oil and genuine MB filter.

There is currently a taillight recall on the model. Call MBUSA and register the car with them (1-800-FOR-MERC) for more info.

Mine was in need of belts, motor mounts, front brakes and recently I replaced the shift linkage, air injector valve and purse system shutoff valve. But I've got more miles than you.

Also check out http://www.benzworld.org/forums/r170-slk-class/ for lots of helpful advice.

Learn to do your own maintenance and you'll be a lot wealthier.[sm=Awwww.gif]

Cheers,
Chris

jJst check everything works, that it has a full service history and that the catalyst doesn't rattle when cold.

My hard top lock sprung a leak after about 60K miles. No way to really check it but you will see signs. The best sign is wrinkling in the leather around the edges of the hard top. If you see this wrinkling you should have it changed before it let's go. You will know when this happens as minerla oil will rain down on you. The replacement part is about $300.00. Installation is another $300.00.

If you live in LA I reccomend Dynamic Performance for repairs. Ask for Mike. He does a good job.

I also like Lomita 911. Owned by a German Gentleman who does a great job and is really reasonably priced for repair.

i got my 1998 slk 2 years ago, and it has been a great car. 2 issues with the car: the tailights kept failing, and the interior is cheap. there has been a recall on the lights and it has been fixed. also the interior is very cheap. the interior paint comes right off if it is rubbed the wrong way. just be gingerly with the interior and you will have a great time!!
