I have a 98' SLK and for the past two weeks I've not been able to get the top to go down. Yes...before I'm at the mercy of my dealership (not good) I would appreciate any suggestion. As I remember, this was a problem a couple of years ago and It sorted itself out. All except for a sticking glitch, just before the top released from the from the front windshield (if I tapped ast the site, it would go on down...a bit of a pain, however it worked) Now, when I push the top release button to go down, there seems to be a short, after pressing the button a few times,I hear the motor, the windows go down, then nothing more. The motor sound no longer. At this point if I press the button, roof up, the motor starts up again and the windows go up.

 

I had a similar problem with my 99 slk. Trunk opened fully and then nothing but humming. I reached up through the pump access panel and jiggled the limiter switch lever and it worked fine. (power off!!! Don't reach up there with power on)Dealer charged me $90 to diagnose it as 2 top switches and wanted $900 (!) to replace.
