Default Problems with paint

Hello,
About three months ago, I purchased a 1998 SLK 230 Kompressor. I am very happy with the car. It drives like a dream...
I noticed thought, that the external paint on this car is very fragile (the car is black). I mean, I can make a scratch on this car with a fingernail... The car also has many small scratches here and there, and rock chips on the hood. I did a search on Google, and from what I have read it appears that there was a period of two/three years during which Mercedes was using this kind of paint.
Is there anything that I can do to the paint to prevent this problem from happening again (i.e., make the paint stronger)? Is it possible to apply some kind of a paint protection?

Thanks for the advice!

Alex

I'm not familiar with a MB paint problem (I'm not saying there isn't one), but all modern clearcoat paints are like you describe. The coats are so thin they can be scratched through just from using the wrong kind of towel to wash and dry it.

When you did your search, did you run across the name Zaino (Zaino Bros)? Read some posts on car forums that have a car care sub-forum. I don't sell the stuff, but I do use it. Check it out. You wouldn't believe me if I started talking about it, so go hear what the world says about it and visit their site.

I have a burgery mercedes (wine red),...and I get the same problem. What I do know is that i use all of maguirse products. To remove scratches I use Maguire X-Scratch and to maintain I use Maguires Gold Class wax. These two products have actually seem to protect my paint alot and give it a brilliant shine.

SLK's look terrible in Silver. Black is the only way to go, IMHO.
