Hello Everyone,
I bought a used 2000 slk230 for my 50th birthday from a non MB dealership . I always wanted to own an MB for along time. Any how as soon as I drove the car home, the "service engine" light comes on. I took it back at the dealership erase the fault, but I soon as I reach home again "SE" light is back. I leave in Hamilton, Ontario and the dealership is in Toronto, Ontario. It's about 65 Km. distance. Anyhow at my own expense, I took it to MB Dealership in Hamilton for Diagnostic testing. Here are the codes they got, P0170, P1420, P1236, P1235, and P1525.The service Manager recomends, replacement of Camshaft Udjuster and it will cost me approximately $1500.00. I'm just wandering if the MB dealership is 100% sure that this is the problem. I took it back at the dealership where I bought it have there mechanic take a look at it and told me it's not necessarily the Camshaft Udjuster is the problem. They check and test it and according to them they were fine.
Another thing I noticed with this vehicle, the first time you start it I have to wait a while before I go. As if there is no power in the begining. The dealership try to help me all they can using there mechanics only. If I choose to take it to the MB dealership it will be my cost. Does any one have similar problem like mine. If you do please drop me a line. If you are an MB expert mechanic, with those fault code would you advice me to have the "Camshaft udjuster replaced.
Please Advice,[8D]

Sounds like one place has already cheated u out of money now a second is about too. Go to an independent shop that is not at a dealership that specializes in German cars. Or if Sleepwalker or one of our other techs are around maybe they can help you.

i will check those fault codes on monday.
am on the weekend now. got some bbq to do beside the lake.
yes, it can't be the camshaft adjuster because you didn't mention any engine misfire.

P0170 (023) Selfadaptation of mixture formation Control module N3/10 (ME-SFI [ME] control unit): adaptation 'idle speed' is at limit value. ([M111])
P0170 (022) Selfadaptation of mixture formation Control module N3/10 (ME-SFI [ME] control unit): adaptation 'part load' is at limit value. ([M111])
most probably the airmass sensor value is fluctuating.
P1420 Y32 (Air pump switchover valve)
ignore this. somebody must have disconnected the connector while the ignition is on.
P1236 Magnetic clutch of compressor: output stage is faulty.
if aircon is good, ignore this. must have a slippage once.
P1525 Variable camshaft timing: output stage is faulty.
this must be what you're talking about.
better clear all the fault codes and drive the car till the warning message re-appears. by that way, we only need to deal with 1 fault code and narrow the diagnosis path.
ask the mechanic to reset the adaptation values.
bleed the fuel rail of any air which could be traped inside.
drain the fuel and refill with a good one.
ask the mechanic to do the manual adaptation on ignition timing to 93RON, injection time to second stage, and sensitivity value to +0.5.
sorry about my late reply. been busy lately setting up a new dealership.

I have been using high octane gas since I got the car. What is 93RON? I will make a copy of your findings with all the fault, and take it with me to the dealership where I bought the car. I will keep you inform as things progress.
Thanks a lot.

before replacing the airmass sensor, let the technician read the actual value.
injection time, voltage, etc.
the part is too expensive to decide without proper diagnostic procedure.
resetting the stored adaptation value is also necessary after the replacement of air mass sensor.
the control unit adjusts according to the aging time and value of the old sensor.
installing a new sensor using the old value will cause the injection time and engine speed to fluctuate.
