Default To warranty or not to warranty?

I am buying a 2000 SL500 with 32K miles.

The car is under MB CPO warranty for 12 months.

I have the option to extend this warranty for a further 24 months for $3600. At that point the car would be 7-9 years old, and have around 42K-62K miles on the clock. Any opinions as to whether to take the extension? Is an SL500 of that age and mileage likely to need $1800 a year of maintenance?

Tia and nice to be a member of the club!

Dude,
$3600.00! That's an awful lot of cheese to lay out for something that probably not going to happen. IMHO chances are you're not going to have major repair on a MB with only 32K unless the car was beat, which I'm sure you would not be purchasing it if it was. Think about this: you're betting $150.00 a month that something going to break. You can have a lot of repair work done (IF SOMETHING BREAKS) for $3600.00. There's usually a deductible of like $100.00 for each occurrence, so real small stuff isn't covered.
Also, what happens after the 24 months period and then you have an major repair. Again, I think you're smart to ask, it's a good question.
Invest your money with something with a better return. Just my 2 cents.
I am curious on one point: Is this through a dealer or after market warranty company?

HTH,
E

The car is certainly not beat, as you said, I wouldn't be buying it if it was (and neither would it have an MB certified pre-owned warranty for 12 months).

The extended warranty is also an MB factory warranty.

I tend to agree it sounds like a bad bet. Just want to hear from some SL500 owners re their experiences.

Thanks!

Keith,
One more thing. If it's a warranty through MB, then the dealer is paying around $1000.00 give or take a $100.00. I agree having piece of mind is great but the $3600.00 price tag is somewhat overboard. Maybe try this: offer $1500.00, this way they're making $500.00 and you're getting the piece of mind. All they can say is no.

BTW, welcome to the group , you're buying the greatest car ever made. I've had my 1998 for 2 years and still get the same thrill every time I drive her. This forum is awesome, bunch of terrific guys here.
All the best,
E
