SL600 to buy or not to buy.

RE: SL600 to buy or not to buy.
I cant possibly think of what would cost $10,000.00 per year in maintenance. It's possible I guess to have one expensive failure in the engine or transmission every now and then. But 10 grand a year formutipleyears? I looked over my service records and the 94 SL600 averaged about $1,000.00 a year and the 95 320SL has been about the same. I am the original owner of these and they were new when I bought them. I never missed a scheduled service. The Ferraris I own are a different story A 15,000 mi or 3year service cost is about $6,000.00 each and yearly sevices are about $1,500.00 each. the rule of thumb isthat it costsabout $5000.00 a year to maintain and repair a Ferrari and they are V-12's also.I can't relate to double that for SL600. I'm surethere are some really negleted and severly abused used cars out there. But with a little effort from the buyer along with the help from some trusted experts these cars can be avoided. Beaware of really "good bagains" or cheap cars.

To answer your question new wiring harness, new injector harness, new top module, routine tuneups, 2 new computer modules (6K by itself) that's not counting a set of Michlein Pilot tires, new softtop, new battery, heck just for sparkplugs the dealer wanted 24.95 each to change out, new filters, new suspension modules.

Don't buy it... older SL500s and 600s are junk. Nothing but problems. I have one that I'd like to drive off a cliff somewhere.[:@]

I bought a 93 600SL with 3k on it six years ago. Now has only 20K. Maintenance includes waterpump and fuel pumpsx2, total cost $2500 with services. Love this car but only use it in the summer for long trips. Remember you should change tires if over 10 years old, also brake fluids etc.

I just paid an additional 3300 for servicing the airconditioner and routine maint, and they said the tranny needs work now too, so I'm sure this month I'll spend a big portion of that yearly maint costs again, the car was always gently treated, garaged and fully maintained. It has about 54000 miles on it, so less that 5k a year. I plan on selling it off for a Porsche or Vette, as I never spent so much or had so many problems with my older W107 type SLs, they served me me for over 30 years without anything pricier than the timing belts.
