SL500 Need a replacement top. What do you suggest? Is it a tough job?
My 95 SL500s top is shot. I've found replacement tops from 500-1000. Which is suprizingly cheaper than I had expected. Has anyone changed their top? Was it a tough job? Which top did you pick and why?
Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt:
Your question on replacing the top on your SL500.
I replaced mine and really don't think it was what I would call a difficult job.
I will say this: It took me a couple of days because I wanted it to be right. I didn't work on it all day or anything like that but I did spend soem time on it. I guess I may be what is called....slow!
As far as I am concerned, it turned out right and I am very happy woth the job. Yuo could never tell that it was a DIY job.
Good luck,
Mac

Hi Mac,
Thanks for the reply. I'm always worried about wrenching on the SL500. Thanks for putting me at ease.
Which top did you end up purchasing? Is there much difference between the various tops available?
Thanks,
Matt

I replaced the top on one of my SLs, a W107 model, it took the help of one of my sons to get it tight and perfect, but wasn't that technically difficult. I used a top with the same German material used by Mercedes from a dealer on ebay. It help having a box full of large clamps to hold everything in place while I installed it. Took about 4-6 hours total.
