It appears we have lost our spare Key/Remote for our 99 500SL and the valet key also. While I have seen the remote offered on Ebay, I don't know if they are for real.

Any advise as to where to buy a new remote (swithblade type) and what I should expect to pay?

Be careful. Went to the dealer in Thousand Oaks, CA, today. Asked the parts man what I could do to fix my remote (SmartKey). It works intermittently. He said I could order a new key for $172. I said "What? Can't it be checked?" His reply was something about something for $155. So I said it was only about 2-3 years old, and he referred me to the service advisor. The service advisor asked me how many miles were on the car. My reply was about 18K. He then told me it was necessary to make an appointment to bring the car in and they would fix it under warranty. This did not sit too well with me. So, I went home, checked the voltage of the two 3V batteries and they were 6.13 VDC. I cleaned the batteries, now everything works fine.
