Default Problem putting up the softop - 87' 560 SL

Hi All,

I have had this car for a couple of years and just had it restored - painted, etc.
The problem is that this is the first time that I had the hard top removed, and since weather was
nice for the last few weeks, just had the top down.

My problem is that I worked for a couple of hours trying to get the softtop up.
My problem is do I lock the softtop latch on the truck first for the softtop, and then lock the 2 latches
in the front or what? The book is not clear on this.

I was finally able to get the front softop latch, however the back of the softop would not come down far enough
to lock the back of the softop to the truck.

Does the level need to be in a specific postion?

Thanks so much for your help!

It is best to start by latching the windshield latches, and then securnig the rear. Your problem may be that the canvas is stiff and slightly shrunken. A couple of suggestions: 1) do not tighten the front latches all the way so you have a little more slack when fastening the rear. Once the rear is caught, go back and tighten the front. 2) When trying to catch the rear, make sure that you have the smaller lever in poaition so the pin on the bottom rear of the roof will catch on the latch when it is pushed down int the hole. 3) If still no luck, try wetting the roof. It will make it stretch more easily. Once all latched down, it can dry out restretched to its old form. Good luck.
