Default Original engine?

I recently bought a 1995 SL600 with 47k miles on it. The car is in great shape and looks almost like new, but I have a hunch that it does not have the original engine. It just doesn't look quite as nice as the rest of the car. New exhaust manifolds, cats, and even a new drive line. And I just discovered my water pump is shot. Would a water pump go bad on one of these cars after only 47k miles? How would I know if the engine is original. Is there a number on the engine that would be visible without tearing the car apart? Is there a database thatI could use to determine whether or not I have a numbers matching car? I don't have any service records either. The carfax history report was clean, no salvage, and shows it was a Los Angeles car and the DMV records are all consistent for the milage. Anyone have any helpful tips?
