new 1999 SL 500 owner
I just bought a used 1999 black with cream interior with 20,000 miles. I want to replace the tires, it currently has Continentals, should I just replace them with the same or is there a better tire to use?
I went and picked it up in another state and while driving home after about 1000 miles, I stopped again for gas and when I started the car the bas/esp light stayed on. I contacted roadside assistance and they told me how to reset it. But it happened 2 more times. Is this a big problem?
Thanks

The BAS light is usually down to a faulty sensor and nothing to worry about - I can dig out some more info if you like. The Continental Sport Contact 2s are probably the best all round tyre you can get - notably with good wet weather performance. Alternatives (in the UK at least) are Pirelli P7000s, Michelin Pilot Sport, Good Year Eagle F1 or Pirelli P Zero Corsas / Rossos for some serious dry grip. If you're on standard 17" wheels then you'll be running 245/45/VR17 all round - 18"s are an option but to be honest I think they spoil the ride - though you do get bigger rears. What spec did you get? ADS? Panoramic Roof? Folding Mirrors? Bose etc?

Couple questions, I'm not sure what you mean by what spec. How do I determine if it has folding mirrors? Would it be electrical or just manual folding? It dosen't look like they fold, but they could, I'm not sure. I haven't gotten the tires yet, I'm leaning toward the Michelin Sport AS.
I won't get the tires till spring as the car will be stored and no sense getting them now and getting flat spots.

Spec as in what options do you have on your car? You can find this out from the VIN number. You would know if you had folding mirrors as there would be a button on the centre console to fold them, the same for ADS etc.

Info, I was having a problem with the BAS light coming on. I had just bought the car used in Sept 2005 and it was stored for the winter. When putting it back in service (spring 2006), I had battery problems, called a dealer they told me to call Roadside Assistance. They brought me a new battery which was the same price as I would have paid for at Interstate. But while the mechanic was installing the battery I told him about the BAS light and he told me that the weak battery was probabley causing the problem. The light hasn't come on since. Just thought it might help someone else if they were having a similar problem.
