mechanical top latches?

mechanical top latches?
Does anyone know about the top latches for a '96 sl500? What exactly are these parts: 129 800 0774, 129 800 0874? cylinder and controller have been rebuilt, but my mechanic says I now need to replace these 2 parts for $1000. The top goes down fine, then only goes halfway up. Could these be the problem or does he not know what he is doing? Where can I get them cheaply or have them repaired cheaply. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Those part numbers are for the complete front latch assemblies including the hydraulic cylinders in each. From what I make of your problem fromyour description, changing these parts will have no affect on the top moving past the vertical position it sounds like it's getting stuck at.
Brookings direction to read the post at the other site is spot on...that and find a new tech!

RE: mechanical top latches?
Fungas,
Seems to be more related to the hydraulics and their inability to lift the top back up. Perhaps the system needs to be bled of air and properly filled with fluid. If the top continues to close with some physical assistance to get past the "dead spot" it sounds like a lack of hydraulics and not mechanical interference. My '95 SL500 has some quirks in the clampdrown and release of the catches on the windsheild post, but I took some cues from my '63 Corvair ragtop and filled the fluid reservoir in the pump motor.
