95 C180 Windshield wiper mechanical problem
Hi all,
I've got a problem on my friend's 95 C180.
The windshield wiper seems to jump out of position/ elongate when I turn it on on the 3rd position (fastest). It hits & damages the left & right windshield pillar. I don't know if I name it correctly, but I think you understand what I mean.
When I turn it on on the 1st and 2nd position, it works alright.
Have anyone seen/ experienced this problem before.
What's the culprit?
How does the system work mechanically?
How do you take the wiper assembly off?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Bob

RE: 95 C180 Windshield wiper mechanical problem
Hi sleepwalker
Thanks for the reply.
Is linkage = wiper arm?
I did check for installation problem. I took the wiper arm off by loosening the 5mm hex bolt. I see that there's no way that the wiper arm can move while the bolt is still tight. Because there is a groove on the shaft/rod for the bolt to go through
Is this what you were explaining before? I'm afraid I might get you wrong.
Behind the arm, there is a strut-look-like rod. When I first checked for the problem, it seemed that the rod was pushed out and couldn't return because of the force (centrifugal may be?) when the switch was turned to the 3rd (fastest) position. It only did that on the 3rd. When I put it back to the 1st or 2nd position, it worked kind of ok.
Thanks for the reply.

RE: 95 C180 Windshield wiper mechanical problem
I've taken off the cover. Thanks to Nick!
I'd like to disassemble the mechanism assy. It seems to me like it (the source of the rotating movement) is missing teeth if it was to use gears.
I can't seem to loosen this one screw holding the rotating arm using regular screwdrivers.
Do I need special screwdriver to loosen it?
Here are the pictures.
Any directions for me?
NB: On the smaller sized picture, the rubber-like thing that slides up and down the 2 parallel shafts should be close to the bottom. But this one is about half way up. I can just push it with my hand to slide it up or down.

RE: 95 C180 Windshield wiper mechanical problem
If the inside mechanism of the pictures above is bad (say for example the teeth on the gears are worn), can I just replace the bad part/ get it rebuilt? Or should I replace the whole thing which seems like a tragedy to pay for?
If anyone has an exploded view of the windshield wiper assy, including the inner-mechanism parts, R&I (removal & installation) of the whole thing, that will help me a lot.
I still can't get the screw out. I tapped several times using a punch and a hammer, it did not work. I'm afraid I'll damage the system or break something.
Waiting for any good news. Thank you.
