Help - 1990 500 SL Ignition Module (EZL)
Hello,
I'm trying to help my father, a proud owner of a 1990 500 SL.
His baby has been on the shelf (approx. 5 months). We have been told that the problem is the Ignition Module (EZL).
We could use your advice:
Where can we find the ignition module?
Do we just need a new one?
Did anyone install a new EZL, but it still not work?
Basically, what is the best course of action?
Believe we are looking for Bosch# 012-545-5732 or 010-545-4032.
Thank you very much. It's driving my father crazy. Anything to help us is greatly appreciated. Hopefully I can fix it in time for Christmas.

How does this one look?

Also, do any of you have experience purchasing parts online? I've reviewed his return policy, but I'm still confused.
After purchasing the EZL, can I return it for a refund if we insert it and it doesn't work?

Hi Everyone,
I think we'll need some more help. My father found and purchased an EZL Ignition Module, but it did not work when we attempted to put it in.
In your experience, does this rule out the EZL? Or should we purchase a different/new one?
The previous post probably recommends the best approach. What's the surest way to confirm EZL failure? Is it through Mercedes or some other mechanic that offers diagnostic testing?
Thank you everyone.

In your first post, you say somebody told it was the EZL. How did they determine that? I seriously doubt the used one is bad, but maybe it is.
So, lets's start at the begining. When did the car stop running, and what symptoms led to that point.
Have you checked for spark at the end of an ignition wire?

thanks fred. it stopped about 7 months ago.
dad says he checked, but no sparks or anything. it cranks, but doesn't start. a mechanic said it was the ignition module, but we never got the electronic diagnosis.
i'm looking for a mobile specialist in atlanta right now.
thanks for your help.

It was parked, in the garage.
Just wouldn't turn on one day. And that was that. We were told it was an ignition module so we spent 6-7 months looking for one.
When we found one a couple weeks ago, we purchased it and tried it, but it didn't work.
So we're back to square 1: confirm it is the EZL.
Then buy a new EZL?

I am guessing not the EZL. Two EZLs bad seems odd. Are you certain there is no spark? Have you tried spraying a bit of ether into the intake?
If it doesn't kick over on ether, then I would guess no spark. But let's make sure first, ok? Try the ether into the air intake, meaning, right into the CIS-E air valve.
