here's a new one for me. My car won't go in reverse. For a few months it would take a few seconds to shift into gear when put into reverse but it won't do anything, backwards that is. It drives just fine otherwise. But when I shift into reverse I can't feel it going into gear.

please please help with diagnosis and cost.

it's just a minor problem, but you need to open the transmission.

was it a 5 speed transmission? then it's the clutch KS.

if 722.3 and 4, then it is the B3. check the lip seals on piston, maybe it is leaking oil. replace the seal.
the B3 is just on the front part of transmission.

glad it's not major, but this isn't something I can handle myself, so any guess on how much a mechanic should charge?

 

that's 6 hours of work on expert level.

i don't know their rate per hour.

Is this a big job??

I have a 1993 SL600 and I have a hesitation before it goes into reverse, then when backing up I hear a RATTLING Noise, which I'm assuming is the noise you mentioned. Other than that it shifts fine in drive.

I'm pretty good with a wrench but have never dove into the bowels of an Automatic Trans. Is the REVERSE CLUCTHES a big job ??

How many special tools are required ?

Also any idea of what the parts would cost for something like that ?

The trany needs rebuild(clatches at least)Nothing wrong with a valve body.
I did same job on 94 sl600 with no reverse.
