I think that there are bridges in the cylinder head which feed oil to the lifters. Look into this before replacing anything. I will try to post on this again in a few days when I have some more info, but definetely replace the oil. Maybe SL600 Cruzin could post a picture showing the head a bit further back, and I can point them out from there. Please;-)

 

Ok, there are 2 bridges per cylinder and the give the oil supply to the hydraulic valve elements. Remove and inspect these for cracks.(assuming it is a tapping noise)

With the rocker cover off, you will see them running across either side of the spark plug holes. Take note of which way around they are. they do have a direction. If these are faulty, the part number is A119 180 02 66. You can just replace the seals on these bridges, A015 997 31 48.

Thanks for posting the pics. It doesn't show the bridges, but the red lines show the locations. This is the best I can do, as I don't have a scanner.

It has been a while since I have had to replace any of these, but I can remember that they were the cause of lifter noises.

No, there was no oil pressure problem.
