450 SL Engine Advice
Hi Everyone,'
This is my first post on this forum. I have a 1974 45OSSL that I purchased four years ago. I have slowly been restoring it. The body and interior is in great shape, and I have redone the brakes, starter, and exhaust system. Now, I am working on two engine problems. The first is hesitation at around 2000 rpm. The car starts easily from cold, and has no warm up issues. However, there is a hesitation around 2000 rpm as the rpms increase. Stepping on the gas gets past ths stumble. I have checked for vacuum leaks and removed everything except the vacuum advance from the vacuum cirucit to no avail. Any ideas?
The second problem occurs during warm up. The engine wll blow a single cloud of white smoke when warming up and being driven down a hill. The smoke is very thick but only last a few seconds. It does this only once while warming up. I noticed some oil arond the hose from the mainiold to the idle circuit. This is the PCV line, but the car has no PCV valve. According to the manual, the car constanlty pulls air through the valve covers whle ruu\nning. I suspect a bad valve seal. Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance

i had the problem with hesitation. my mechanic suggested checking the fuel tank for debris.
after cleaning the problem improved but not eliminated. the next thing i did was to change the fuel filter. that solved the problem. you may try changing the filter. hope it helps.
you did not say how often you drive this car. if driven for short peiod and parked, condensation accumulates in the mufler. that may in some vehicles, upon start up and warm up, blow white smoke. hope this is of some help

Stradrus,
I forgot to mention that I had changed the fuel filter with no effect on the hesitation. It almost seems like a vacuum leak, but only occurs over a very small rpm band. I also checked the temperature sensors on the fuel injection imputs. No problems there either.
The smoking far exceeds anything that some condensate could cause. I found some fouling on the second spark plug. I think oil is getting into that cylinder, but only during warm up. I suspect a worn oil seal on that intake valve.
The hesitation problem is more vexing. I dissambled the idle air circuit trying to find a vacuum leak, but did not. My next step is to use some staring fluid to see if I can find the vacuum leak.

hi
don't think your problem is a valve seal. valve seals produce black smoke. white smoke
will always come from water. you may have antifreeze getting into the oil. change oil and see if this solves the problem. if not check for cracket head. hope it is not that.
having ruled out the filter and gas tank it is probably a vacuum leake. get a can of carburator cleaner, spray every vacuum hose, and intakes. if the rpm increases around a certain vacuum intake that is where your leake is.
let me know if any of those ideas work good luck
