It's not a typo, that is what is happening. I got a 83 380 SL from ebay and when starting, she goes to 3000 RPM. I located and removed the idle control unit, checked for bad components, and reconnected. When started she went down to 1800 then playing with the board, she went back to 2100. For giggles, I removed the unit, and started the car, this time she went right to 3000 RPM. Should she have started without the controller unit? Is there something else that I should be looking at.

The idle speed control valve may be stuck open. And yes, the car should start without the unit.
